Rep. Bill Shuster (R-Penn.) will take over as chairman of the House of Representatives Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in January, replacing John Mica (R-Fla.) who must step down due to term-limitation rules. In a letter addressed to Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Mica announced he was endorsing Shuster as the next chairman, citing Shuster's time as chairman of two different subcommittees. Shuster, who has represented the 9thdistrict of Pennsylvania in Congress since 2001, said he supports “streamlining” reform efforts to speed up transportation construction timetables and has said he wouldn't rule out higher gasoline taxes as part of a broad deficit-reduction agreement.
