IOWA Seeks Rest Area Sponsorships
June 18, 2012
The Iowa Department of Transportation last week marked the third state to announce that it will seek competitive bids on sponsorship rights for its rest areas, which host 16 million visitors annually. Iowa DOT said it is seeking funds to help defray nearly $3.7 million in annual operation costs.
Iowa DOT said the program will allow corporate sponsors to place one “acknowledgment sign” on the main interstate highway right-of-way in advance of the rest area. The department may also allow signs within the rest area building.
Iowa joins Virginia and Ohio in pursuing the potential revenue stream to offset maintenance costs at the facilities.
