The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a warning for retailers that "Backoff," a new malware targeting retailers' point-of-sale (POS) systems, could leave retailers vulnerable to attacks that could result in compromise of consumer payment information.

Hackers are utilizing remote tools that allow businesses to access their networks from home or one the road, such as Microsoft's Remote Desktop, Apple Remote Desktop, Chrome Remote Desktop and others.

DHS released a technical advisory offering a series of steps  that retailers can take to ensure the safety of their systems, including limiting remote access, updating network security, as well as cash register and POS security. For details on these steps, please refer to the heading "Solutions"  in the advisory.  While the malware is currently undetectable by current anti-virus software, DHS anticipates that with the release of technical details on the "Backoff" malware,  anti-virus vendors will quickly update their software.  DHS advises retailers to make certain their anti-virus software is current.
