05.10.2010 - NATSO Day on Capitol Hill A Huge Success

NATSO members made their annual pilgrimage to Capitol Hill last week, meeting with Senators and Members of Congress to voice how vitally important the truckstop and travel plaza industry is to the national economy and how Congressional votes affect its ability to thrive. Nearly 50 NATSO members met with their elected officials to discuss such critically important issues as the upcoming highway reauthorization, and to oppose tolling and rest area commercialization schemes as revenue raisers for the states.
Tuesday evening NATSO hosted its annual Capitol Hill pie reception, serving nearly 250 pies from local truckstops to legislators and their staff. Hundreds of people attended this reception, which recently garnered attention in the Washington Post and carries NATSO's name to all 535 Members of Congress.
Midweek, NATSO members attended a Congressional breakfast with Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Ore.), a champion of transportation issues and a key architect of the current surface transportation funding bill. DeFazio discussed the current status of the highway trust fund and voiced his opposition to commercialization and tolling.
