I-80 Tolling Decision Could Come This Week – Still Time to Act!
With a decision looming on whether the Department of Transportation (DOT) will permit Pennsylvania to toll Interstate 80, NATSO is urging members to contact DOT to voice their opposition and outline the impact such a measure will have on the truckstop industry. DOT could issue a decision as early as this week on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission’s (PTC) application to toll I-80.

While the application only applies to one state, its approval will set a dangerous precedent for other states to attempt similar tolling schemes.

The PTC, along with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), submitted its third application to DOT in late October. Under the proposal, the PTC would assume responsibility for operating and maintaining I-80, paying annual lease payments to PennDOT. To recover the costs of the lease payments, the PTC would install tolls on the interstate. A large percentage of the money paid to PennDOT would be diverted away from I-80, however, to fund transit projects in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.
